Carneros
2009 Carneros Merlot

t

he Carneros Merlot comes from vineyards located in the heart of the Carneros Appellation where wind and fog from the San Pablo Bay cool the vines and allows the grapes a longer growing season. Buena Vista's founder, the Count of Buena Vista, identified the Carneros climate and soil as the optimal location for quality grapes. This Carneros Merlot is a full-bodied wine that is bold and balanced.

Mouthwatering aromas of ripe plum and freshly-baked rhubarb pie are accented with light notes of cranberry and black pepper. On the palate, alluring flavors of cherry and allspice complement the wine's soft mouthfeel while well-integrated tannins lead to a long and spicy finish.

The Merlot grapes were handpicked at night to preserve fruit character and gently destemmed before a five day cold soak which increased color, fruit essence and structure. Following primary fermentation in open top fermenters, the wine was aged in a combination of American, Hungarian and French Oak barrels for 16 months. A small ammount of Syrah and Pinot Noir was blended before bottling to add depth and complexity to the final blend.
